I remember several years back when I asked for Insanity as a gift. I couldn’t believe I was requesting a DVD series of workouts that at the time was $149. Over three years later, it has got to be one of the greatest gifts I have received and I still utilize the series! Insanity challenges your body each and every time. Shaun T leads athletes through various workouts including cardio intervals, plyos, abs, and intervals. I have practically memorized these DVD series by now, and while I switch them up and can go months between even using one, I felt it was time for a change.
So, one snowy afternoon, I designed my own “Insanity” Workout.
I wrote down some of my favorite and most challenging exercise on note cards. I then flipped them upside down and selected 12 of them (So it is almost like a surprise!). I split them into 3 circuits, 30 seconds of each exercise, followed by a 30 second rest and repeat this 5 times. Sound too easy? Add a few more exercises or an additional circuit, or perhaps more time to each exercise! Is this too difficult or are you short on time, reduce the amount of exercises. The options are limitless. The combinations never get boring. The body always responds to a challenge, and this is it. I make sure add 10 minutes of stretching or yoga at the end.
I like being able to switch up my HIIT once a week with these cards. It makes at-home cardio a little more interesting, time flies by, and I can tell my body is getting into a fat burning zone! I also enjoy being able to just turn on my favorite music and being able to adjust the workout times to my required cardio session time.
It’s easy to create your own “Insanity” workout. It’s not easy to give it 110% every time! Just go for it! So my advice: make up some cards, have them ready for when you have some free time at home, set your alarm 20 minutes earlier then normal or bust out a few exercises while your UMP waffles cook, and enjoy an ever changing, challenging workout opportunity!
